Meet the Head Coach: Mike Szymanski
Mike Szymanski graduated from Satsuma High School in 1978. He attended George Wallace Community College in Selma, AL receiving an Associate degree in liberal arts. In 1980 he transferred to the University of William Carey in Hattiesburg, MS. He graduated in 1982 earning a Bachelors’ degree with a double major in Mathematics and Physical Education. During his college years he played baseball on scholarship for both schools. Coach finished his education in 1997 earning a masters’ degree from the University of South Alabama in Education and Mathematics.
After graduation from college in 1982 coach returned to his alma mater as a Math teacher and coach. During the past thirty one years he has coached football, basketball, cross country, and baseball. He became JV baseball head coach in 1986-1987 where his teams won back to back Mobile county championships. After being named head varsity baseball coach in 1988, his team brought home a 6A State Championship. Twenty eight years later he has complied a record of 580 wins, 296 losses and a .662 winning percentage. His teams have been to the state play-offs 21 out of 28 years, winning 17 area championships, 4 region championships, and 4 runner-up spots. He has coached the East /West All-star games several times as well as the 2001 North/South All-star game. Since his tenure began, he has had 112 players to sign college scholarships. Ten of his former players are now high school or college coaches and six have played at the professional level. His brother Stephen Fuller played on the 1988 State Championship team and has been the pitching coach for several years. In 2013 he was inducted into Alabama Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. His 2013 team was the first to bring home a 5A Area 3 championship to the new Satsuma City School System.
Coach Szymanski is currently teaching geometry and statistics at St. Luke’s Episcopal School. He has been employed there since 2014. He was the high school boys golf coach for the 2016-17 school year leading them to an appearance at the State Championship Golf Tournament in Auburn, AL where they placed 3rd in Class 1A/2A.
