Lower School

St. Luke’s Lower School provides a wide range of programs that promote the growth of the “whole child.” We believe the college preparatory process begins with standards and high expectations established in the early years that foster a love of learning. The latest findings in neuroscience revealed the need to tailor instruction to the way learning occurs. Our reading program for students K4-3rd grade provides strong phonetic fundamentals, fosters higher order thinking skills, and explicitly teaches comprehension strategies. Our 4th and 5th grade students are immersed in authentic literature using the Foundations & Frameworks program. Recognizing the need for equipping all students to fully understand complex ideas conveyed in text, we offer this unique and challenging program. Foundations & Frameworks incorporates brain-friendly methods of instruction to maximize learning.

Students in 5-year-old kindergarten through the fifth grade use the Go Math program. This program is designed to teach math concepts in one grade level and continually review those concepts while adding to and expanding upon them year by year. Students are taught and encouraged to problem solve and think through problems critically. Through this type of instruction an emphasis is placed on STEM(M) skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medical) and integrates these skills across the curriculum. Our goal is to produce innovative problem solvers ready for the demands and challenges they will face in college and life.

St. Luke’s Lower School offers a strong core curriculum and so much more. Students attend enrichment classes weekly including Art, Music, Computer, and Foreign Language. Lower School students attend Physical Education class every day and Chapel services are held weekly. Children also visit the Library once a week where they can check out books, enjoy storytelling time, and participate in the Accelerated Reading and Math program. Lower School students visit the Math and Science Lab where they are able to experience hands on activities that begin to explain the how’s and why’s of the Science. A variety of field trips taken throughout the year are examples of outside learning experiences that enhance and broaden the education received in the classroom.

St. Luke’s Lower School serves children K2 through the fifth grades and offers a comprehensive curriculum that is challenging and stimulating. However, we believe our greatest gift to our students is the strong sense of family that makes early school experiences personal, positive, and fulfilling! This sense of inclusion in a nurturing community lays a foundation for learning that will stand them in good stead, not just for the rest of their school years, but also for the rest of their lives.
